Since its first edition in 1946, the Met Gala has been the most awaited, sensational and exclusive fashion phenomenon of the year gathering on one red carper more dazzle and glam than any other fashion extravaganza out there.
Each year, guests are challenged to choose their evening attire to match the theme of the Costume Institute’s annual exhibition, which throughout the years proved to be quite a task. This time, the theme and inspiration for the dress of the night was “China: Through the Looking Glass“. How did celebrities approach the subject and what trends conquered the Met Gala’s Red Carpet? Let’s see!
Looking at J. Lo’s stunning gown by Atelier Versace featuring a fire red dragon on a sheer fabric and Solange Knowles’ astonishing 3D origami dress designed by Giles Deacon, there is no doubt that this year’s theme brought a lot of excitement and sparkle with the flamboyant designs, elaborated embroideries and striking éclat.
From the remarkable cherry blossom embellishments on the dress (Bee Shaffer in Alexander McQueen ) and on the skin itself (Cara Delevingne), exquisite creation resembling Chinese paper folding art (Amal Clooney in Maison Margiela) to the dramatic red flame headpiece worn by Sarah Jessica Parker and created by Philip Treacy, there was a lot to admire, applaud, or perhaps abhor.
Some fashion designers certainly didn’t lack creativity to interpret the Chinese motif and turned their designs into real show-stoppers like the spectacular Zendaya’s ensemble by Fausto Puglisi with its incredible asymmetrical red skirt hand-embroidered with crystals and velvet sun emblems.
Rihanna’s astounding fur-trimmed yellow satin gown turned out to be a total jaw-dropper, and many claim that the star simply stole the show in this sensational attire by the Chinese-born designer Guo Pei whose name is now googled more than ever before. The creation certainly drew fashion world’s attention to the East and Chinese fashion designers who “are so sophisticated in technology, and the future of fashion is technology, Chinese designers are well placed to take advantage of this, opening up the market and the parameters of fashion” said Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute show in the interview for New York Times.
Some other designs, although perhaps less theatrical, brilliantly displayed the splendor and glam of Chinese theme, sparkling with crystals and gold that brightly reflected the lights of paparazzi’s flashes. Among them: gorgeous Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein, fabulous Karlie Kloss in Atelier Versace, startling Kate Hudson in Michael Kors, or beautiful Dakota Johnson with her Chanel China Doll minaudière and in totally dazzling checkboard mini dress made of hundreds of glistering discoball mirrored pieces. She surely made the paparazzi’s favorite.
This SS15 fashion trends were also boldly exhibited – bare midriffs (Miley Cyrus in Alexander Wang), floral embroideries (Joan Smalls in Roberto Cavalli) and appliqués (Annabelle Wallis in Dolce Alta Moda, Lily Collins in Chanel), eyelets (Jourdan Dunn in Burberry), total whites (Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy, Selena Gomez in Vera Wang), peekaboos (Cara Delevingne in Stella McCartney, Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture) and even wearable art pieces (Katy Perry in Moschino).
The high neckline was yet another recurrent detail of many looks: Karlie Kloss in Atelier Versace, Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy Haute Couture, Tabitha Simmons in Dolce Alta Moda, Miley Cyrus in Alexander Wang, Caroline Trentini in Atelier Versace, Kate Hudson in Michael Kors or Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein.
Sheer fabrics and nude gowns put many in amazement. Here both Beyoncé in Givenchy and Kim Kardashian in Roberto Cavalli were breathtaking, almost totally captivating paparazzi’s attention. Many exalted the incredible art work and admired the embellishment of these incredible creations but there were also those who doubted the aesthetics of it.
And you, what do you think? Do you like designers’ renditions of the Chinese inspiration? Which is your most and least favorite? Does Kim Kardashian’s see-through gown display the brilliance and artistry of design, or does it display too much?
Have a fashionable day everyone!
