From the sunny towns of the French Côte d’Azur to the NYC runways and soon to the streets, the gingham pattern makes a fresh entrance to the fashion scene of spring 2015. Once so beloved by Brigitte Bardot who wore it on her wedding day in the 50’s, today this joyous print wins hearts of fashion designers who reinvent and revive it in their spring collections.

If you remember that sweet Judy Garland’s cornflower blue pinafore dress she wore on her venture in Oz, you know exactly what we are talking about.

Gingham is a fine to medium-weight plain woven dyed cotton fabric and features a checkered pattern that can be of a various size. What’s interesting, gingham looks the same on both sides which means there is no right or wrong side as the fibers are colored before being woven. The common colors are blue/white or red/white although we will see other color variations this upcoming season.

The origin of gingham seems as blurry as the checkered pattern itself. However, we know the name came from “genggang” which means “striped” in Malaysia that was a Dutch colony at the time. Gingham was first manufactured as a stripe and later evolved into a check. It was exported to Europe in the 17th century and then to USA where it became one of the most fashionable trends of the time.

This spring, we will see a refreshed face of gingham that is casual, fun and very feminine. Diane von Furstenberg pairs black and white gingham pattern with yellow and pink, Altuzarra draws a classy line with a provocative splits, Michael Kors goes back in time and shows a nostalgic side of gingham print, Bottega Veneta offers soft layers of it and Oscar de la Renta incorporates gingham in the elegant separates.

Take a look and tell me what you think!
